Bisque

At Kiku & Clay, bisque firing happens at Cone 06 — around 999°C (1830°F). This is the moment your clay stops being fragile greenware and becomes solid, porous bisqueware, ready to take on glaze.

The one non-negotiable: bone dry. Truly, properly dry — not "I left it near a window" dry. Any trapped moisture has a habit of turning into steam mid-firing, and steam does not ask permission before it leaves.

Not sure if your piece is ready? That's what we're here for. We're always happy to talk you through prepping your work for a Cone 06 firing — just ask, before it goes anywhere near the kiln.

Glaze Earthenware

Cone 03 firing at Kiku & Clay sits around 1100°C — the sweet spot for low-fire clays and earthenware glazes that were never in a hurry to mature at higher temperatures.

The main thing to get right: your clay and glaze both need to actually agree on Cone 03. Mismatched materials and kilns have a way of finding each other out, so it pays to check compatibility before firing day rather than after.

Not sure what plays nicely together? Ask us — we're happy to help you pick the right clay, glaze, and firing combination for what you're making.

Glaze Mid-Fire‍ ‍

Cone 6 firing at Kiku & Clay hits around 1222°C (2232°F) — the mid-range sweet spot for clays that need a bit more heat to really come into their own.

As always, the clay and glaze need to be on the same page about the temperature. Cone 6 is forgiving for a lot of things, but not for mismatched materials — that's usually how kiln disasters are born.

If you're not sure what suits Cone 6, just ask. We're always happy to help you match the right clay and glaze to the firing, so your piece comes out the way you pictured it, not as a cautionary tale.
